The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili delivered a speech at Venice Commission Conference

The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili went to Venice after Romania, where Venice Commission held an anniversary event. Mikheil Saakashvili attended the session together with other European leaders. He delivered a speech at the conference. The President of Georgia once again reminded European political elite about the illegality that Russia carries out on the occupied territory of Georgia. The President of Georgia stressed his attention on the problems of IDPs and on the facts of violation of their rights.

“European Council has a huge importance for our country. We have impressive memories personally to Gianini Bukikio. I had a chance to meet him. He remembered in details every meeting he held with Georgian politicians, among them with me. Georgian people decided firmly to build a democratic country that will be based on defending human rights and on the rule of law. I would like to notice that first among European structures that supported Georgia was Venice Commission. We cooperate actively with Venice Commission after Rose Revolution. Despite embargo, despite occupation Georgia and Georgian people try to move forward more and more. Our enemy occupies twenty percent of Georgian territory. We have an agreement on cease-fire as well, but Russia is not fulfilling it. In 25 kilometers from our capital and President’s Palace Russian artillery is located, but despite this fact we are building democracy. We have economic growth; Georgia is still on the first place in fighting with corruption; according the data provided by World Bank Georgia occupies first place in Europe. We hope that we will develop not only the modern country, but an exemplary constitutional system. Democracy is the best way for defense and development. We do not have oil and fuel, but we have other resources for the development of our society”, the President of Georgia stated.
