The President of Georgia met with the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmstrom today. The process of visa liberalization with the EU was the main topic of discussion. The EU Commissioner for Home Affairs presented the action plan related to this issue to the Georgian side.
After the meeting Mikheil Saakashvili and Cecilia Malmstrom made joint statements for the press and answered questions of journalists. Representatives of the media focused on the Vilnius Summit and expectations of Georgia for this summit.
The European Commissioner focused attention on the importance of the summit. According to her statement, the processes before and after the summit are very important. Cecilia Malmstrom stated that there are ongoing negotiations regarding visa liberalization which will reach a new stage in two weeks time and new tasks will be set in this direction. She noted that it is too early to predict the results of the Vilnius Summit because it depends on whether the government of Georgia will continue reforms. Cecilia Malmstrom promised Georgia assistance in this matter and added that the work of the Government and the Parliament of Georgia will be decisive in terms of results of this summit.
The President of Georgia also answered questions. He noted that a new door is gradually opening for Georgia on the road to European integration, and in order to make this process irreversible the country must stay on the democratic course and continue progress.
“It is overly important to us to reach the Vilnius Summit in good shape. Good shape means retaining independent judiciary and media in Georgia, and for nobody to touch these two main functions of democracy. Political parties should also cooperate to a certain extent and there should be stability. This is our road to the Vilnius Summit. We have no other road but to Europe and like never before, this was expressed today during the visit of the EU Commissioner. One more new door leading to Europe is gradually opening to us. This is not an easy process but it will definitely open and we are witnessing this today. I am very happy with this and I would like to thank the Commissioner and each one of you” – noted Mikheil Saakashvili.
