The President of Georgia attended the opening ceremony of the Nenskra Hydro Electric Power Plant

The President of Georgia attended the opening ceremony of the Nenskra Hydro Electric Power Plant in Chuberi today with the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Mikheil Saakashvili signed the document based on which the construction of a hydro electric power plant will begin on the Nenskra River. The Head of State also met with the local residents and talked to them about the importance of the project, while noting that the local people will be employed at the construction of the plant, which will decrease the unemployment numbers significantly. The Head of State also noted that like Mestia and Tetnuldi, Chuberi will soon be transformed into a new ski resort.

A Chinese company “Sinohydro”, is building the Nenskra plant with the Georgian side. The construction will end in approximately 5 years. The project envisions supplying the entire region with the locally produced electricity. The plant will have a capacity of 210 megawatts and its annual output will be 1.2 billion kwt/hr. The output of the plant will be 260 million kwt/hr during winter. After the launch of the Nenskra Hydro Electric Power Plant it will be possible to replace one 120 megawatt block of a thermo electric power plant with it. Additionally, the Nenskra plant will increase the water reserve of the Enguri Hydro Electric Power Plant during winter and accordingly will give it an opportunity to put out more electricity.

1200 persons will be employed at the Nenskra plant construction. 630 million will be invested in the project.

In sum of 4 billion USD will be invested in the energy sector, which will create 3 thousand megawatts of additional power and employ 13,000 people.
