Mikheil Saakashvili and Micheline Calmy-Rey discussed the issues related to the membership of Russia into the WTO
The President of Georgia met with the President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation – Micheline Calmy-Rey. She familiarized Mikheil Saakashvili with the position of Russia on the compromise document offered by Switzerland. The document, prepared by the mediator country, envisions respecting the demands of the Georgian side, hence monitoring of the flow of cargo at the borders by international observers and sharing information electronically.
The official decision of Moscow is yet unknown. The last round of the work group negotiations is scheduled for November 9-10 in Geneva. In case the sides reach an agreement, 153 countries will decide whether Russian becomes a member on December 15. The negotiation between Russia and the European Union was completed last week.
The officially Moscow applied for membership into the WTO in 1993 for the first time.
