The President of Georgia met with the Chairman of Central Election Commission
The President of Georgia met with the Chairman of Central Election Commission, Zurab Kharatishvili. The date of the next Presidential election and the importance of them being held democratically were the main topics of discussion. The President once again confirmed October 31st as the date of the elections.
Mikheil Saakashvili positively assessed the work of the Central Election Commission, and focused attention on the quality of the independence of institutions. He expressed hope that the government will keep assisting the CEC in functioning separately from the state.
“As you know, the following Presidential elections will be held on October 31, 2013 by decree of the President of Georgia. I met with Mr. Kharatishvili exactly regarding this issue. I would like to say that this is our second meeting over years, which is namely of how independently the CEC is working, and how high the quality of their work is. I personally never had a desire to interfere in their work, and there was never a necessity for personal contact either. Political processes were very radiant, but all of us say how few and unimportant complaints there were against the election administration. This is why I hope that the government will keep assisting independence and high quality professional work of the commission in the future. We will support this in every way” – stated the President of Georgia.
