The President of Georgia met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and the EU Commissioner for Human Rights

The President of Georgia discussed ongoing political events and future relations with Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Torbjorn Jagland while meeting him in Strasbourg. Discussion also touched on the risks related to a possible shift in foreign policy as a result of the new government taking power. Special attention was given to the relationship with the Council of Europe in the future in terms of Georgia’s development.

Later today, Mikheil Saakashvili met with the Human Rights Protection Commissioner, Nils Muiznieks. Discussion touched on the progress which the ruling party reached in recent years in terms of human rights, religious freedoms, judiciary reforms and democratic institutions. The sides spoke about the necessity of continuing this progress.

The visit of the President of Georgia to Strasbourg is continuing, within the scope of which high level bilateral meetings are planned.  Mikheil Saakashvili will hold a meeting at the European Court of Human Rights. The Head of State is also scheduled to meet with the President of the European Court of Human rights. He will also attend the exhibition of modern Georgian architecture at the Council of Europe building. The President of the Parliamentary Assembly, Jean-Claude Mignon will also attend the exhibition.
