A working visit of the President of Georgia in the United States has begun today

The President of Georgia met United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today. They have discussed the issues regarding the resolution of the existing conflicts in Georgia. Mikheil Saakashvili asked UN to take decisive measures and familiarized Ban Ki-moon with his own proposals. The President spoke on the issues concerning the return of internally displaced persons and the formation of the special commission, which will develop effective recommendations during the conflict resolution process. Mikheil Saakashvili focused on the ineffectiveness of CIS peacekeepers and noted that during the next week Georgian side will present its own plan on conflict resolution to the International Commonwealth.

I have explained to the secretary general in detail that we are not satisfied with the current situation in respect of the CIS peacekeeping operation, because after Russia's unilateral decision to lift sanctions on Abkhazia this operation remains without any legal grounds and is counterproductive. And the UN itself has failed to fulfill its duties, because what the UN along with the CIS peacekeeping operation should have done - facilitation of the return of internally displaced persons - is actually in standstill. In the next few days, we will propose very important initiative about what we are offering to the Abkhaz people and what we are offering to residents of the conflict zone and those who have to return to Abkhazia. We had consultations with various political parties, with various groups both outside and within the country, and early next week we will lay out those proposals about what are our additional, new and very important offers. We want those issues to be resolved peacefully", stated the President of Georgia.

The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili will continue his visit from New York to Washington DC.
