The President of Georgia responded to the questions of international media in
Lisbon
The President of Georgia responded to the questions of several leading international TV companies in a live broadcast in the frames of NATO Lisbon Summit. Mikheil Saakashvili made the first extensive comment for BBC correspondent and spoke about all major issues in his live interview.
"Mr. Saakashvili you remember when you promised after your war with Russia that you would become a member of NATO. Is NATO remaking on that promise?
- No, actually, today the communiqué was discussed and as far as I know, because we were close with Ukraine and there was a danger with Ukraine that they are no longer declaring the intent to join in the nearest future, there would be some kind of sliding back, but it did not happen. Actually I am happy - what I have heard is that the language has been somehow strengthened, it confirmed the open door policy, it confirmed that Georgia will become a member of NATO and it praises Georgia's reforms. So, actually, we have no reason to worry, on the contrary, I mean, of course, I would be happier if I had already been standing here as a leader of a member country of NATO, but it is the process, we are in the process, we are determined. We are in the process. President Obama just reiterated in the personal meeting with me. I think Today it is one of the two meetings he had here.
-Could he promise you when could you become a NATO member?
- Well, I think he has been very complementary supporting of the reforms we have been implementing in the very complicated region, both on democracy and security and economy. We are world's number one reformer according to the World Bank - that is quite an achievement based on where we were coming. I think America has reaffirmed its support and it is very good.
- What about worming the relations between Moscow and NATO. You know Moscow wants to join NATO?
- Hopefully Moscow's attitude will become more civilized. I am in support of reset provided that it is based on principles so far. Today again President Obama has underlined very clearly that they strongly appear to defend territorial integrity of Georgia to the fact that you know, Georgia's two territories are occupied, we have 20% of our country occupied. Parliamentary Assembly of NATO indeed has just said a few days ago in Warsaw, basically on unilaterally and everybody voted for it that they had a resolution about Georgia's occupation and ethnic cleansing committed in Georgia with participation of the Russians obviously and we have half a million refugees in a country of less than five million people, 4.9 million people. So, actually, these are all our concerns. On the other hand with forming the relations, with dialogue, with more contacts between the West and Russia. Hopefully, we will get to the situation that Russia also become more civilized towards its neighbors, because it is not only Georgia that has problems. Our problems are of course acute, but Russia has problems with whole range of neighbors, on whole range of issues. Hopefully, it will be reversed with the reset policy as well. I am sure that it happens.
- Are you going to use this opportunity?
- You know, they have been hiding from us. I told many countries publicly despite the fact that they are the occupiers and everybody recognizes they are the ones that had been behind the ethnic cleansing and they don't allow people to go back, they try to colonize. In Abkhazia in fact they started classical 19th century fuggish colonial style, but no matter was, there is no alternatives to dialogue. We are willing to talk together in any place without any preconditions at any level. Certainly, I am to talk to President Medvedev, I have no scruples s about it, I would love to talk about any issue he wants to talk about. We are very flexible and open-minded".
The President of Georgia gave an exclusive interview to CNN as well. Pentagon correspondent for the CNN Christopher Lawrence touched an issue of deepening NATO-Russia relationship and got interested if this fact would influence Georgia's integration process to the Alliance.
"We also benefit from generally said, provided that it goes on and once Russia becomes less paranoiac, more cooperative , more self-confident in a nice way, because I think lots of things have come almost in a paranoiac sense of insecurity . Hopefully, more neighbors of Russia will keep itself more safe", - pointed Mikheil Saakashvili.
Euro News broadcast the interview with the President of Georgia as well. Mikheil Saakashvili evaluated NATO new strategic conception.
"NATO has always reaffirmed the support for territorial integrity of Georgia. NATO parliamentary assembly has just adopted a resolution speaking about ethnic cleansing committed in Georgia obviously with Russia's participation, about occupation - unambiguous term of Georgia's regions, which is obviously very illegitimate acting of International low", - stated the President of Georgia during his interview with Euro News.
