The President of Georgia and the NATO Secretary General had a phone conversation on October 12, 2012. According to assessment of the Secretary General, today is a historic moment for the development of Georgian democracy. He congratulated the President of Georgia on holding free and fair elections and reaffirmed his support for Georgia’s integration in NATO. He noted that Georgia’s integration in NATO is an irreversible process and the country is being given an opportunity to make important steps on this road. At the end of the phone conversation the NATO Secretary General expressed sorrow regarding the death of the Georgian soldier during a military operation in Afghanistan and extended condolences to the President and the Georgian people.
