The President of Georgia made an emergency statement today. Mikheil Saakashvili focused attention on the issue of overcoming a Presidential veto by the Parliament on the amnesty legislation.
The Head of State noted that by this action the Parliament took responsibility for a fundamentally anti-State and dangerous act, which has put the standing of the safest country in Europe reputation at risk. According to him, based on this act criminals convicted of several of the harshest crimes will leave the penitentiary system, and it will be a positive reinforcement for potential criminals. He called the fact of passing the amnesty legislation shameful in the history of Georgian parliamentarianism, and noted that the society must make the relevant conclusion.
Mikheil Saakashvili also commented on the fact of interrogating the former Chairman of the Adjara Government, Levan Varshalomidze. According to him, it is shameful and unjustifiable to summon a person, who spared no efforts for freeing and rehabilitating Adjara, to the Ministry of Finance Investigation Service for interrogation.
