The President of Georgia held a press conference today, and spoke to representatives of the media about ongoing political events in the country. Mikheil Saakashvili drew attention to the attack perpetrated against state institutions, and called on the members of Government to protect the law and constitutional principles. Namely, the Head of State touched on independence of the judiciary, media, and necessity to continue social projects. According to him, the Georgian population voted for betterment of social conditions and not lawlessness and chaos. The President does not eliminate the possibility of a veto if the Parliament will pass changes to the organic law “regarding common courts.” According to the Head of State, if these changes are passed a danger of the Judiciary Council and the Judiciary Branch to lose independence arises, and it may be left under the Executive Government’s control. Mikheil Saakashvili also touched on the facts of oppression on the local self governance bodies, and noted that the Government must ensure their normal function.

The President of Georgia also answered questions of the representatives of media. The journalists were mainly interested in Russian-Georgian relations, possible dissolution of the Government, and possible transfer of the Special State Protection Service to the Government’s control as well as the prospects of the “United National Movement”
