The President of Georgia attended an EPP Summit in Brussels as a result of a personal invitation by the President of the European People’s Party, Wilfried Martens. The main topics of the summit are values and aspirations that unify the European leaders.

After the session Wilfried Martens once again called on the new Government of Georgia to respect the existing democratic institutions in the country, and retain progress reached in this direction. He once again assessed the recent developments in the country and spoke about implemented reforms.

“We also discussed the important situation that emerged in Georgia. The previous governments implemented important reforms and reached progress on the road to European integration. Additionally, it became possible to hold the parliamentary election process fairly in a right way. However, the actions of the new government – arrests and oppression of the media – cause serious outrage in Europe. We call on the new government to seize such actions and respect institutions of a democratic state such as freedom of media and rights of the opposition” – stated the President of the European People’s Party.

Leaders of member states of the EU, of other European countries, President of the European Commission, and representatives of the European Parliament participated in the workings of the summit.
