The President of Georgia focused on the issues such as democracy, rule of law, human rights protection, an open society as well as transparent and fair elections during his speech at the 67th United Nations General Assembly. As he noted, the Georgian statehood stands on exactly these fundamental values.
Mikheil Saakashvili once again called on the world community to react in a timely fashion to the external threats of Georgia from the northern neighbor, and focused attention on the military exercises near the Georgian border.
The President once again condemned the abuse facts that have happened in the Georgian penitentiary system, and noted that the Georgian government reacted to them like a democratic government. He spoke in detail about the changes in the penitentiary system, and noted that fundamental reform of the system has already begun.
The Head of State also touched on the election process. According to him, a very competitive election environment has been created in Georgia. He focused special attention on the importance of international observer missions.

The 67th General Assembly of the United Nations was officially opened today. The session was attended by 116 heads of states and foreign ministers. Over 150 important topics were on the table including very important topics such as conflicts, the current situation in the Middle East, nuclear threats and development of international law.
