The President of Georgia met with the electors of Telavi

10/1/2011

The President of Georgia held a meeting with electors at the Telavi Theater today. Mikheil Saakashvili addressed the local population, focusing on such issues as the election environment, current reforms as well as projects and works currently underway in the entire Kakheti Region.

“Kakheti is a special region of Georgia and many projects are being implemented in Signaghi, Gurjaani, Sagarejo, Dedoplistskaro, Kvareli, and Lagodekhi; many things are also being changed in Akhmeta.  However, none of the members of our party – representatives of local government or the Governor  are forgetting for one minute that Telavi is of course one of the most important centers of Georgia. No matter what we do or accomplish, no matter how much we work, I always say that Telavi deserves more and there is much more to do here. I would like to tell you that you have done  something historical in recent years. Serious works were already beginning in 2005, we were reaching markets including wine exports, the construction of houses began, people earned a little money, but Russia set an embargo and hit the very heart of Kakheti, first of all Telavi. They predicted that unhappy Kakhetians – first of all Telavians, would come out together with sticks, overthrow the government, open the gate of the fortress for the enemy and escort them into the heart of Georgia. They knew where the mood of Georgia is created and that’s where they hit us. Telavians answered them just like they answered Shah Abbas, who destroyed the vineyards; Just like they answered many conquerors before, just like they answered Russia in the 19th century – the main uprisings against Russian imperial rule were happening here; Just like they answered thousands of different enemies, who invaded the most fruitful and remarkable soil of Georgia; the most hardworking people, in order to frighten them and burn their soil. Kakhetians answered them with the strongest resolve, unity and patriotism that anyone has ever expressed in the history of Georgia. I want to thank you for that on behalf of the whole of Georgia.” - stated the President of Georgia during the meeting with local citizens.

Mikheil Saakashvili remembered the Majority Deputy of Parliament – Gia Arsenishvili and noted that he was the region’s true son, who served his country honestly and with gentleness that was typical of him. In place of the late Member of Parliament, the President nominated Vasil Davitashvili, who according to him will continue the affairs started by Gia Arsenishvili with dignity.
