The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili reacted on price increase on wheat in Georgia and tasked the Georgian government to carry out special activities on this matter. Mikheil Saakashvili together with the Prime Minister Nick Gilauri and the Minister of Agriculture Bakur Kvezereli visited one of the supermarkets in Digomi and got interested in the changes of new trends reflected on the market basket. The President required from the government to present the package of activities by means of which it will be possible to decrease the risks caused by the existing trends around the world. Mikheil Saakashvili noted that the main task is to make sure that the price increase on wheat would less be reflected on Georgian population and especially on the socially unsecured population. As he noted the market diversification should be brought in, in order to make sure that Georgia is not dependent on only one country regarding wheat import. The President noted that the price increase on wheat is caused by the increasing demand on wheat, and the harvest is significantly decreased.
It is known that the harvest of wheat is decreased by 4 percents around the world and in Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan - that are the main provider countries of wheat in Georgia - by 25 percents, these countries locked the market totally.
"When we depended on one country in regards of energy the price on energy increased very often and in fact we were blackmailed permanently. The same happened now - we were dependent on one region only regarding wheat. I ask you to present the package of those activities that will us a chance to diversify the import, in order to secure our population at most. No one should try to monopolize any sphere and use any mechanisms artificially even by commercial means. We have to stop the increase on prices for our population by the fall", Mikheil Saakashvili stated.
