President Saakashvili visits Netherlands

5/5/2005

President Mikheil Saakashvili, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia and other members of the delegation left for Texel, the Netherlands yesterday. The Georgian delegation visited the museum of the rebellion and the cemetery of those soldiers who died in an uprising against the German occupation. President Saakashvili honored the lives of those Georgians and Dutch guerrillas who scarified their lives to the fight for freedom.

During the uprising in 1945 against the German captors 600 Georgian soldiers were killed. The survivors of the Georgian uprising brought Georgian soil to the cemeteries of their co-fighter.

"800 Georgians who rebelled in Texel lost in an unequal fight. Though they had killed 2400 fascist Germans," the President said, adding that this was the most tragic page in the long history of Georgia.

President Saakashvili will return to Georgia today.
