President Saakashvili briefs on ongoing events in Georgia

Today President Mikheil Saakashvili held a briefing on the ongoing events in Georgia and discussed several important issues in the country.

President Saakashvili talked about the law on facilitating the process of granting licenses and permits stressing that with the adoption of this law an antibureaucratic revolution took place in the country. President Saakashvili underlined that the amount of work that was done in the country in the last year and a half was not done during the past 15 years. According to the President by the end of the year 70 per cent of the roads and street lamps will be repaired and transportation problem will be solved in Tbilisi.

President Saakashvili also discussed great debates in the Parliament on the new system of electing local self-government in the city of Tbilisi and stressed that by the draft law, presented by Mikheil Machavariani, the public would simultaneously elect the members of Sakrebulo (the City Council) and a Mayor, which will help solve many of the existing problems in the city and make the mayor more accountable towards the public.

"We will create the system based on which Georgia would have an accountable and public controlled self-governance," President Saakashvili said.
