President Saakashvili meets with Justice Minister

4/17/2006

Today President Mikheil Saakashvili met with the Minister of Justice Gia Kavtaradze who said that any citizen of Georgia can hold several passports at once and the passports will be issued in any district of Georgia. The new passport will be 48 pages thick and its cost will vary with the period of time it takes to issue the passport. President Saakashvili said that this initiative is very important because people travel a lot these days compared to the previous years.
"Until now, if you wanted to receive the passport before the date of its issue you should have given a bribe. Today, by officially paying much less money, it is possible to receive passport as soon as possible. Nowadays, people travel more. We have abolished visa regime with Turkey. People travel to Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia, therefore, it has become necessary to have 48 pages thick passport. We don't live in Soviet times when people could go abroad only twice a year. It might happen so that a person is in Adjara and has to go to Turkey for many times. Therefore, our aim is to have a thick passport and enable people to receive it not only at their registration place but also in any region of Georgia, because this is a single country and a single territory with single rules. These rules must be aimed at making peoples' lives easier and more comfortable," President Saakashvili said.
