President Saakashvili visits Samtskhe-Javakheti Province

9/12/2007

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili today visited Samtskhe-Javakheti Province, where he opened a newly refurbished police station and cinema in the town of Bakuriani. Afterwards, he inspected repair works on the road connecting Bakuriani with the province's other major resort town, Borjomi.

Saakashvili went to Borjomi Park, where he paid a visit to the newly opened swimming pool and spoke with locals. The president said that 20 years ago the site was a swamp and that everyone thought that repairing the pool would be impossible. He pointed out that during the presidency of his predecessor, Eduard Shevardnadze, Borjomi Park had been split into land plots and "distributed to the president's loyal vassals."

"Had that government remained in power for even one more year, Borjomi would have a lot of tasteless large houses, like in Tbilisi's Sairmis Gora neighbourhood, instead of this park," Saakashvili said.
